Polymer Chemistry Research Scientist

Cambridge Polymer Group is seeking a full-time Research Scientist in polymer chemistry for immediate hire. CPG is a highly respected material science research laboratory, and you will have an opportunity to work on a variety of exciting projects in the fields of health care and consumer products, directly impacting patient quality of life and the consumer.  The successful candidate will be expected to contribute towards multi-disciplinary projects that included polymer synthesis, as well as small molecule/monomer synthesis. The candidate will synthesize novel and conventional polymers and will characterize these polymers with a variety of analytical techniques

Primary tasks include:

  • Design and synthesis of polymer systems when provided with target properties and intended application.
  • Synthesis of polymers using a variety of methodologies (e.g. free-radical, cationic, anionic, condensation).
  • Polymer structure characterization with routine analytical techniques, such as NMR (1H, 13C, and 2D), GPC/SEC, and FTIR.
  • Purification of monomers and solvents for use in polymer synthesis, as well as synthesized small molecules. These purification techniques include liquid-liquid extraction, sublimation, flash column chromatography, thin layer chromatography, precipitation, re-crystallization, and distillation.
  • Critical analysis of data generated by other personal
    • Provide a resource for secondary analysis/review of data with a particular emphasis on critical thinking
  • Writing qualification documents (to ICH or USP criteria), SOPs and training staff to newly developed methods
  • Documentation, data/method/library organization, report generation, and clear communication of results
  • Experience with routine chromatography (GC, LC, GPC/SEC) and chromatography method development is a plus.

Our Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate should hold at least an M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Polymer or Chemistry, or equivalent work experience. 2-5 years (depending on degree level) of experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred:

    • Contract R&D or CRO/CDMO lab
    • Industrial polymer synthesis lab
    • Academic polymer chemistry lab with substantial throughput
    • Materials science lab
    • Synthetic organic chemistry lab

The candidate should be comfortable working in a small, adaptable research company focused on non-routine, high-quality and rapid projects.  The candidate should also be capable of working to timelines and strict protocols in support of medical device and pharmaceutical regulatory environment.
